Barefoot Into the Fire: Just to Save His Neighbor

A Missouri teacher ran barefoot into a smoke-filled home, crossed broken glass and helped carry his elderly neighbor to safety.

When Washington High School teacher Clint Schneider spotted flames coming from his elderly neighbor’s home, he didn’t wait for someone else to act.

He ran across the street barefoot.

Schneider had been home with his family when he noticed the fire through his daughter’s window. Knowing his neighbor lived alone and had difficulty getting around, he immediately headed toward the house while his wife called 911.

The door was locked.

Still without shoes, Schneider tried to get inside but couldn’t force the door open. His 11-year-old son brought him a rock, which Schneider used to smash the glass in the door and reach inside to unlock it.

Then he stepped into the smoke.

And onto the broken glass.

A few pieces became lodged in his foot, but Schneider kept moving.

Inside the house, visibility was poor as smoke filled the rooms. Schneider repeatedly called for his neighbor until he finally spotted her hand through the darkness.

He reached her and began helping her toward the exit.

In a later interview, Schneider said they were not moving quickly enough, so he wrapped her in a bear hug and carried her the rest of the way out.

By the time firefighters arrived, the woman was safely outside.

Washington Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Skornia said the situation could have turned deadly within minutes and described Schneider as a “genuine, bona-fide hero.”

Schneider didn’t seem interested in the title.

To him, it was something much simpler.

It was neighbors taking care of neighbors.

The fire caused heavy damage to the building and displaced its occupants, but officials reported no injuries.

Sometimes heroism arrives wearing a uniform.

Sometimes it comes with years of training.

And sometimes it comes running across the street barefoot because somebody needs help.

Clint Schneider didn’t stop to ask whether someone else would do it.

He simply went.
