They Demanded Answers. Now the Grand Jury Report Is Public.

For months, people demanded answers about Nolan Wells’ death. Now the Jackson County district attorney has released a redacted grand jury report and a video explaining the decision not to indict anyone.
As far as putting the report in front of the public? Good. People should be able to read what the grand jury found instead of relying on whatever claim happens to spread fastest online.
The grand jury heard testimony and interviews from 43 witnesses, reviewed physical and digital evidence, and unanimously returned a “no true bill.” Its report says it found no credible evidence that anyone who traveled to or from Horn Island with Nolan engaged in criminal conduct related to his death.
That matters. So does what the report doesn’t settle.
Both the state medical examiner and the pathologist hired by Nolan’s family determined that the cause and manner of his death were undetermined. The grand jury said accidental drowning was consistent with the evidence, but it did not claim to know with certainty how he died.
Nolan’s family and their attorney, Ben Crump, say they still have questions, particularly about injuries found on his body. They have called for further investigation and the release of more records. Nolan’s mother also said she was told the grand jury’s decision only minutes before the district attorney posted her video. I can understand why that timing would hurt a grieving family.
I also think the public needs to reckon with what happened while accusations raced ahead of the evidence. A judge, witnesses, and government offices connected to this case were subjected to alleged threats, and three people faced federal charges. Those charges do not mean Nolan’s family or their attorneys were responsible for the threats. They do show how dangerous this case’s online speculation became.
In my opinion, releasing the grand jury’s findings was the right step. A redacted report is not the entire investigative file, and a decision not to indict does not answer every question Nolan’s family has. But it gives the public something concrete to examine.
People can continue asking fair questions about Nolan’s death. They should also be willing to distinguish those questions from accusations the available evidence does not support. Nolan deserves the truth. So does everyone whose life has been affected by this case.
